Yeah, you're right, the Vigor's back seat was indeed cramped. I really liked the styling and stance of that car, though, and the five cylinder engine was excellent. Circling back to the very low mileage RL you're considering, be prepared to change the fluids, belts and hoses if the haven't been replaced according to the schedule in the owner's manual (not the Acura dealer's schedule). Belts and hoses, and some fluids ... Read More

Thanks! The only reason I traded my Vigor in was because after I had my son I realized just how small the backseat was. His infant seat literally touched the back of my drivers seat, and I'm only 5'1". As long as Acuras continue to be good to me, I will be a lifelong customer!

My mistake, the Acura I am looking at is indeed a 3.5 RL. You provided a lot of good background information about Acura's and now I see why I am drawn to the TL model...it reminds me of my Vigor I loved so dearly! :) The car was owned by an elderly lady who just passed away and her family traded her car in to purchase an Audi....silly them :) Someone ... Thanks for the update, rem. Now, regarding the low mileage 1997 Acura you mentioned, there's no such thing as a 2.5 RL. Acura made a 2.5 five cylinder TL and a 3.2 V6 TL, and a 3.5 RL, but the model designation you mentioned doesn't exist. The good news is that the three models mentioned above are solid cars but, obviously, old. The 2.5 TL was the successor to the 2.5 ... Read More

Relax, it seems to me you bought yourself a nice car, not a nightmare. Let us know what the Acura dealer says. Let's assume the worst, and the transmission fails. Acura has extended the warranty on the transmissions on the 2000 - 2003 model years to 100,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. Therefore, the bottom line is that your car is still covered and will be for a while ... Read More

Most of the repairs/replacements ie cabin air filter, transmission fluid flush and replacement, are just routine maintenance items. Who would drive with a dirty cabin air filter? The lower ball joint replacement is also somewhat common, as is the motor mount replacement. I recently went over my service invoices, and found that the front motor mount had been replaced at the 60K major service, along with timing belt and all the ... Read More

Sorry your car needed the repairs you listed, but none of those repairs, except for the ball joints, is unusual for the TL. We had to have the motor mounts on my wife's '99 TL changed at about 98,000 miles, so based on our experience, those on you wife's TL failed prematurely. From what I learned, motor mounts are a week spot on TLs of '99-'03 TLs. "...our dealer does the ... Read More

On my third 2003 TL Transmission
Written by: roccoman7 on Oct 26, 2008 12:19:25 AM
I noticed a post from a few days ago bashing honda in that their transmissions fail in 30k miles or less. For a while there, that was pretty much my experience . I had transmission failures at 19,000 and 61,000. I had a couple minor problems between that but I am proud to say at 101,000 miles nothing at all has gone wrong in the last 40,000. Although I was not ... Read More

I do not disagree that the quality of Acura or Honda cars has been slipping in recent years. But I guess you also do not disagree that their quality is still better than many brands. Cars are getting more complex these days, as manufacturers try to jam many more electronic, mechanical and computer-related gizmos into the car. Thus, the chances of having some of these gizmos fail increase exponentially. [Putting on ... Read More

'Tis a shame that you have had such issues. But, from my experience, your experience (and the poor tortured souls you have had to spend so much time with at the dealer...) are atypical. My family has owned Honda products since the mid '70s, I can't recall a single issue of note. More recently, since 2003, my father has owned 2 TLs, my brother an MDX and an RDX (and now ... Read More

If you think a Honda/Acura transmission needs to be replaced every 30k miles, you have not driven or owned a Honda/Acura. Honda had real problem with transmission in 2001-2003. 2009 TL looks ugly and too big. I think sales of TL will drop a lot. My girlfriend saw it on the road and think that it is new Saturn model.

Oh, I agree (and hope that you are correct re: rare major Acura malfunctions!). I was just broadly noting that any car out of warranty is a potential repair invoice waiting to be paid... Odds are just, for example, more likely that an expensive repair will be required by a 6 year old MB C class vs. a Honda Accord. I have the Non-nav TL so I probably have fewer bullets ... Read More

I'd partly agree with you, but one rarely hears of major mechanical malfunctions with Acura's relative to the engines, suspension, etc. The automatic transmission is clearly one of the biggest bullets in their magazine. All the electronic toys are probably little bullets as well, given that our MDX has had the Nav unit replaced twice in under 3 years and 40k miles. On the other hand my 1995 Nissan Maxima at ... That was a very pleasant surprise... You might not be as pleasantly surprised when the replacement breaks and the next one is on you. I keep hearing that the rate of transmission failure of pre-2004 transmissions on the TL is "only 2%+/-". But anecdotally, of the dozen or so people we know that have TL's and/or pre 2005 MDX's, at least 3 or 4 have had at least one transmssion replacment ... Read More

2003 TLS Automatic Transmission Problem
Written by: dakineguy on Oct 19, 2007 6:43:05 AM
I've owned my Acura TLS since new. I've been having problems the past year with the way the car accelerates and thought it needed a tune-up. I had an engine mount replaced, but still the problem continued. Took the car in again and found out it needs a new transmission. Fortunately, Honda had provided an extended warranty on the transmission and I will get a new one free of charge. That ... Read More
