I'm Loyal!!!
Written by: satire on Oct 28, 2004 11:11:54 PM
So where's my loyalty bonus Acura???? In the fall of 1984 I went to Toyota to buy my first new car. The salesman (brother to my best friend at the time) refused to remove his $500 markup on a stripped Tercel that I could barely afford. Next day I went to Honda. Got myself an Accord hatchback at a great price because the salesman took pity on my financial situation. Eight ... Read More

RL Styling and RL "cachet" 2005
Written by: mevande on Oct 28, 2004 8:05:00 AM
I have been reading the RL "threads" here (2005). I have an 1999 BMW 740i with 38,000 miles. Its paid for:). The BMW has been more reliable than any Acura I have had (3.. 89 Legend coupe red!, a 1992 Acura Legend and a 1995 Acura Legend "GS".. GS was a blast and best "Acura" yet in my opinion). No doubt there is allot of cool technology in the new RL. ... Read More

Quote: "I agree with your wood/console statement. My 91 Legend has it. Wood around the shift area would greatly improve the luxury look. It seems the '05 RL's hype is technology--very clever of Acura to reap mark-up dollars from people for a lot of features that will go mostly unused like a new toy 1 month after Christmas! Beware the buyer that purchases solely on technology, as the competition will "one-up" ... Read More

Acura RL v. Audi A6
Written by: liy on Oct 18, 2004 12:45:37 PM
Based on back to back test drives of the '05 Audi A6 4.2 (correct: no 3.2's currently available) and the Acura RL, I definitely preferred the fit, finish, ride and handling of the Audi. The RL seemed(imho)too much like a cross between a Lexus and a Honda Accord - really wonderful electronics, nav, stereo, etc., but ride was somewhat underpowered (at least as compared to the the Audi 4.2)and I did ... I doubt the night vision (Honda showcased it first in the Dualnote prototype at 2001 Tokyo Motor Show) and LKAS (Lane Keep Assist) will make it to the RL. They will definitely be offered in Japan since the lesser models have it. Intelligent cruise control (something that we expected to see in 1999 TL since 1998 TL-X concept had it) will definitely be offered. I would like to see Acura offer ... Read More

"Acura had it's chance to dominate the market, but they dropped the Legend, and introduced a ton of bland cars. After the Legend was discontinued I lost all interest in Acura. Nothing has come out of that car company that makes me even think about their name." Yeah, I know what you mean. The Vigor was an "okay" car, but not a real market leader. The TL that replaced it was ... Read More

With the new RL, Acura is trying to go back in time and perhaps improving upon it. The Acura Legend was a success, but never meant to compete with more powerful V8, and offered a sensible alternative with a balance between sport and luxury. The orientation got lost with the 1996-2004 RL. It leaned away from the balance into the world of isolation. But, the RL wasn’t the only car affected ... Read More

Headlights have been a very defining things in Acura/Honda lineup since the early 90s. Was there another mainstream car in 1990 or so with single lens headlamp like Accord did? Many automakers continued on with two piece headlamps thru late 90s. In the mid-90s, the 1995 Acura CL-X concept started another era of Acura/Honda headlight styling where headlamps took a shape other than a rectangle, a square or a circle. The ... Read More

Getting excited and then. . .

. . .rain on my parade. Many long time lurkers and posters alike certainly know that there is a camp that seems to be virtually certain that Lexus and Acura and some other (usually Japanese) cars are of the highest caliber with respect to reliability. And, those of us who have -- finally -- placed a Premium Japanese car on our shopping list are beginning to believe that it is possible ... Read More

To improve its acceleration, assuming my guess that the torque ratings will be "OK" or "good" but not "oh wow, impressive," Acura may have elected to lower the final drive ratio and made 5th gear a bit taller "overdrive" (in an effort to raise its combined MPG). A six speed transmission with both 5th and 6th being overdriven, but 5th only mildly so, would somewhat counter and "mask" the hunting that ... Read More

Mevande - I get what your saying (and agree with the premise), but I don't think that factor will have as big an impact as you seem to be suggesting. The current RL is a joke when compared to others in the 40-60K range. It pretty much competes as a larger, roomier Lexus ES300. That does give Acura a handicap. But the new RL seems to be such a giant step ... Read More

High Mileage 1999 Acura RL...What Should I Do?
Written by: lexuslx on Jun 14, 2004 9:49:51 PM
I need some advice... I am looking at a 1999 Acura RL (no nav) with 107k miles on it and no service records. It is being offered at a small independent dealership for $12,800. I drove the car about 20 miles today and everything seemed okay. I called the local Acura dealership and asked if they had any service records for it, but did not. With this being a high mileage ... Audi cache. . .

. . .has probably gained a wee bit since 1999, but an Audi is, to this day, in the US at least, not seen as having the same "I've arrived" factor as the BMW's and Mercedes. The Audi may be the German Acura in that regard -- although, the upcoming A6 and the current A8L and perhaps even the current S4 (which won the comparo between it the M3 and the ... Read More

But does not having Navi and AWD mean that it's not a luxury car? No. But like I said, luxury is not about cutting back. It is about providing more than people need. More luxurious cars will have more excesses. If I were getting a car like RL, with all the features and AWD, for $45K, I wouldn’t whine about it a bit. My argument is that in the 40k to ... Read More

I agree that advertising alone will not fix the current legacy issues with the RL. But a combination of good product and good press can make a car. Take the original Ody vs the 1999 redesign as one example. Or the last Altima vs the new one. Acura may never have the brand cache of the german competition. That's true enough. But, if this RL fixes the problems with the old ... Read More

The RL's biggest problem has been the TL-S and now the new generation TL. There was/is virtually no reason at all to buy a RL over the TL, none. Model year 1999 was the beginning of the end for the RL, it was rendered obsolete as the new TL took off. I've never seen a luxury brand who's entry level car humiliates their supposed to be top-of-the-line car. Acura has to ... Read More

Production

Honda cannot simply snap their fingers and increase production capacity. It takes years to research a new line. The site must be located, the viability of the workforce determined, financing secured, environmental impact studies conducted, contracts negotiated (or officials bribed), and then finally they get to build the thing. By the time the line is built, or even expanded, the car it was designed to support is now several years old ... Read More

Actually, I think that entire review could be summed up with two sentences, "New cars are good. Old cars are bad." That's really all it's telling us. I don't disagree with the assessment of the RL, but the description of Acura's place in the market is weak. For example: the author cites the RSX and TSX as the way things should be done. With the TSX, I agree. However, the RSX ... Read More

basballmom94- I'm a little late (CONGRATS ON THE PURCHASE!), but I'd still like to share my opinion of the extended warranty issue. When I purchased my 2002 RL in July I sold my 1999 TL to my best friend. Example: a 1997 Lexus LS400 ( NADA comparable luxery car comparable to the RL) with 57,768 mileage (dealer retail)is asking $29,500 VERSUS a 1998 Acura RL with 40K mileage (dealer retail) is ... My 1999 RL lease is about to end. A very nice car,but absolutely 0 fun to drive. I have been a loyal Honda/Acura owner for many years and cannot believe Acura has not significantly changed this car for what will soon be 7 years. I feel sorry for the dealers who have to try to persuade their customers to rebuy these cars. Goodbye Acura!

Actually, right before the 2002 model year, you could get any BRAND-NEW Non-navigation 2001 Acura RL pretty much anywhere in the country for about 32 - 32.5K. These were NOT demo cars, nor did they have any extra miles on them, as you seem to suggest. I know this because a couple of my friends bought RLs at that time.
