Re: styling [y2ktony]

If I had to rank european brands based on cookie cutter styling, MB would rank on top. The only thing that really stands out in a typical Benz is the grill. Audi, would fit at the other end of the spectrum. If I were to pick a car solely based on exterior styling, Audi/VW could be it. BMW has tried hard to move away from relatively docile styling but fell face ... Read More

I just want to thank those who gave some excellent responses to my posting. You expressed many of my personal sentiments which I did not express in my posting as I wanted to get the opinions of others and see how they coincided with mine. I didn't really expect answers vastly dissimilar to what you expressed as I think that we Acura fans seem to have a similar genetic structure when ... Read More

With the new RL, Acura is trying to go back in time and perhaps improving upon it. The Acura Legend was a success, but never meant to compete with more powerful V8, and offered a sensible alternative with a balance between sport and luxury. The orientation got lost with the 1996-2004 RL. It leaned away from the balance into the world of isolation. But, the RL wasn’t the only car affected ... Read More

Here's the high quality version of that Top Gear C6 Review: http://www.sleepy-fish.com/sleepy/Top_Gear_Corvette_hi.wmv I'm not sure how the 2005 RL discussion veered into the 2005 Corvette, but to bring it back on topic, my father is seriously thinking of getting a new sedan to replace his 1996 Chrysler Cirrus. Right now, he's debating between Lexus (ES330) and Acura (TL). I'm trying to convince him to wait an extra month or 2 to ... Read More

I leased my first Acura RL in 1997 and fell in love with it immediately! I always drove GM cars until that time--I am now happily married to Acura. When my lease expired, I leased a 2002 RL. My current lease expires at the end of this month and I am seriously considering purchasing it for the residual value of slightly over $22,000, as the car has less than 34,000 miles. ... Read More

Headlights have been a very defining things in Acura/Honda lineup since the early 90s. Was there another mainstream car in 1990 or so with single lens headlamp like Accord did? Many automakers continued on with two piece headlamps thru late 90s. In the mid-90s, the 1995 Acura CL-X concept started another era of Acura/Honda headlight styling where headlamps took a shape other than a rectangle, a square or a circle. The ... Read More

I'm surprised to see that people see so much resemblance between BMW 7-series (and 5-series? 6-series yes, but 5-series? C'mon) and not between Acura's own offerings from the past, a mix of Acura CL and TL (1996-98). I even see some resemblance in the rear to the outgoing RL! Thats evolutionary styling approach IMO. Unlike 2004 TL which I would call aggressive, the new RL's styling approach is understated, and thats ... Read More

I associate Honda with sport (not cushy). People loved the Legend because of that. They felt bad when Legend became the RL with a cushy ride in 1996, complained, Acura listened and tried stop-gap measures to address it until now. There can be different baselines to define sporty. IMO, TSX is the sportiest of the Acura sedans. TL is essentially a touring luxury (“TL”), somewhat sporty, but comfort gets almost as ... Read More

It is impossible to avoid new technologies. And sometimes, these technologies are not really new, just a variation (evolution of ATTS from 1996 Honda Prelude to 2005 Acura RL), or being applied to new applications (diesel-electric hybrid power plants in locomotives to cars). One of the big reasons companies like Honda and Toyota prefer to take baby steps when launching new technologies is just that, a typical buyer may not be ... Read More

Actually, the rear of the new RL is using Honda’s own styling elements. The crease near the tail lamp that many are pointing to as something similar in BMW 7-series, actually existed in 1996-1998 TL. The tail lamp itself is very similar in shape and size to those from Acura’s past as well. The front is, again, very RL-like, and the side seems to show Acura’s new lineage.

Caddy vs Acura:
Written by: carguy58 on Apr 11, 2004 10:51:48 AM
You can't compare the 2. Acura post Legend era really wasn't that good. There was nothing wrong with the 96-98 TL but it just didn't sell as Honda wanted it too. Ever since the MDX Acura has started to regain its form. Caddy had its faults in the 90's too. Both Acura and Caddy fell behind the Germans and Lexus in the 90's. As far as Acura's cars using the same ... Read More

I’ve seen people comment that it looks like an Accord. Some said… Catera. A few have said Millenia. You say it looks like Infiniti I35. So I assume I35 looks like Millenia, which in turn looks like Catera and the Caddy looked like an Accord (going in reverse of their launch order). Interesting, isn’t it? I see this style as inoffensive, while retaining familiar cues that I have come to expect ... Read More

Acura tried too much to be like Lexus in the 90's. The RL wasn't sporty, neither was the 1996-1997 TL, which as we know, didn't last long.

Well that is the Honda/Acura way. If you think the wait on the RL has been long, you should see what the NSX guys have been going through up until Acura/Honda finally showed a concept car in that direction, they've been waiting for something, anything from Honda about the NSX for more years than RL fans. I'll bet a paycheck on New York being THE show for either an RL concept ... Read More

Sure I know what I'm talking about. Do you know what your talking about? Honda did add more power in the 2002 RL. It went from 210 to 225. Why throw a more powerful engine on top of a chassis that was designed back in 1996. As wisely stated by someone else here, its better to build it from the ground up. Over the past few years, besides reading Honda interviews ... Read More

03 RL gets tonque lashing
Written by: goldkey on Oct 22, 2002 9:24:51 AM
Edmunds just posted overview for "new" 03 RL. Boy, they gave them hell - No luxury and no performance. Pretty damning. But I think is fair. As everything is relative. Note, when basically the same car came out back in 96 it got great reviews, but with every year as RL remained basically unchanged while things around it did, the reviews got less and less positive and more critical. Which is ... Read More

The $3,000 rebate is real. I am currently negotiating with two dealers for an RL. The latest bids are $35,253 for an RL w/o Nav and $36,999 with Nav. Both bids include mats. I currently own a 1995 Acura Legend Coupe with a six speed manual transmission. I intend to keep this car forever.
