Disappointed- Inconvenient Car
By tcars1 on
2012 Acura MDX 4dr SUV AWD (3.7L 6cyl 6A)
Had 3 months, car is not convenient, there are feature which make you wonder who thought of this? Obviously someone not driving but designing the car. If you get the car you will see what I mean. You can open the power lift gate with the key or with a button in the driver door but the power lift gate DOES NOT work with the truck button. Sure it releases the trunk and then you have to yank it up but its not powered…but is on the down slope. If you walk up to the car and it is open, you can’t simply hold all of your bags and “touch” the hatch door handle…no you have to open the trunk. You cannot open the power lift gate without first unlocking the entire car. Say you are at the stor
and you want to put a bag away you can’t simply open the back and keep the entire car locked. You have to unlock the entire car,
open the trunk, close the truck and not forget to lock it again. Dumb. If you have smaller kids you cannot see the movie upfront when in park so you have to wonder how to fix the movie for them by guessing buttons or just taking it out and putting it back in. If kids are playing with the windows and you lock them out…get this…. You cannot use ANY of the other windows. Huh?? So after you win your battle with your kids and lock the windows (usually down) and have them let go of the back button…you can’t put it back up…until you unlock all the window, hoping they
have stopped playing with the buttons to, try and quickly put it up with them noticing just to try and lock it again. Stupid. The middle console which opens like a clam is very annoying…it should of opened up. The ways to display temperature, mileage left, etc is confusing, 2 button games. The center LCD screen which for us is just blank since there is really nothing useful to put on there, would have been nice if they added a digital speedometer. To many screens, you have nav which shows JUST nav, another one with shows radio and clock, another which shows temp. Temp and clock should be on nav so passenger can also see. We bought this over the GMC Acaida- we should of stuck with the acaida.
O forgot to more things - if you have the car running and are in park and need to open the power lift gate for, say your wife while out, you have to first unlock all the door (saftey issue as now the kids doors are unlocked) and THAN you can open the power lift gate! The car door handle does not work with two pulls to open the lock from the inside... you have to unlock the car (pending settings) to get out. Very annoying. GMC, BMW, mercedes, etc. if you open the door handle from the inside twice it unlocks the door. Not Acura. What a disappointment! Do not recommed.
Hi, your comments are helpful. however, I misclicked the thumbs down. I thought they were comments.
I am looking for a luxury midsize car. MDX sounds good so far.
I may post my own review after the purchase and drive.
Funny, I just noted my REAL USER review has 38 thumbs downs and only 2 up... It is great that your car has some power, and rides well, or the nav works but if you have kids and need to use this for daily driving it is not a convenient and useful vehical. There is no getting around the fact that the features-less listed above are from someone who does not have kids, does not drive, or does not think how a driver will interact with the car (door handles, lift gate, window lockout botton, movie does not show up front in park, etc.)
Well at least you know what not to expect.... or what acrua does not tell you.
Having no power lift gate is something you should have noticed when you purchased the vehicle, and to go ahead and purchase it anyways and then complain about it later on is sorry to say, totally on you for not doing your due diligence before agreeing to drive it home.
Also, having it unlock all of the doors including the rear hatch when you press the unlock button on the key is far better than just inlocking the hatch and leaving all of the doors locked, it's a safety feature.
Imagine you need to get your kids out, wouldnt you rather be able to unlock the doors from your button on the key?
perhaps acura should program it so you single click for just the hatch, and double click for all the doors and hatch?
Everyone do yourself a favor and ignore this gentleman's review. Power rear hatch is standard on 2010 and newer MDXs.
You can open it with a button on the key fob. Do you have to unlock the car first? Yes, but how much trouble is it to press the key fob button? And - it is a safety feature to prevent a case where a single errant push of the key fob button could result in your hatch opening unknowingly and leaving your vehicle and its contents exposed. The MDX is a great family-friendly vehicle. Just drive it for yourself and see if it meets your needs. But, ignore this guy's rambling review.
You are correct, we did not "notice" or I guess believe the rear hackback could not be power on up and must be a setting. We never thought a car advertised as having so many technological advancements would be so stupidly designed with poor features in and out. I don' t understand your locking analogy ..... you have to unlock everything before you can power up the hack... which means my kids doors are also unlocked... not safe, a mistake on acrua, on of many.
Either way we finally Dumped the car and won't be missing it anytime soon!!! We got an Infiniti JX 35 and it is awesome. Has two things the acura also lacked but 99 other things the acura did not have.
A real Tech advancement from power hatch, keyless entry, able to see the movie up front for the kids so you can actually fix it, no clam to open for the inner console, don't have to unlock the entire car to open the hackback, etc. etc. etc. No comparison. We must have been in la la land when we looked at the MDX. Have fun with your, we won?t be missing ours one bit.
