MDX transmission software fix
Written by: unhappykris on Aug 29, 2011 12:24:43 PM
All, I got the software "upgrade" done on my 2005, since then my MPG has fallen from 19 to 14! This is due to the fact that they simply made the 5th engage at 45 MPH instead of 37 MPH or so previously. This took care of the symptom of the chatter in the tranny, but did not fix the problem. This only made my MDX get me gas millage as ... Read More

I too have been a faithful Honda/Acura owner with ZERO issues. The MDX WILL have transmission problems so factor the 4500+ into your car payment. Or...STAY AWAY. Check out the Mercedes M-Class or Lexus RX330+. Acura is not coming clean and confirming they have transmission problems. Corporate office refused liability and said they can only offer me 40% coverage so I'm stuck with a heafty bill. They are also saying the ... Read More

Should I buy 2005 MDX?
Written by: dsr6079 on Aug 26, 2011 4:06:50 PM
I want to buy a used MDX but am afraid to after reading all of these messages! I have a 99 Acura TL that I've had for years and no major problems--love the Acura. I know there are always lemons out there so you can't go by just a few. However, this transmission issue has me concerned!

It appears that when Acura switched the MDX from the VTM-4 system to the SH-AWD system mid-decade the transaxle failures became less of an issue. I don't really know when the switch was made.

ACURA MDX 2005 Transmission Flaw
Written by: bluelady1 on Jun 24, 2011 3:56:58 PM
Hi: My MDX has 47000 miles. It had the same problem and was jumping when I braked like the accelerator pedal was stuck. I took it in to the dealer and they did a software update. Did not fix the problem. It is dangerous and will cause personal injury if the brakes do not grab. The Acura people claim there is no problem. There is and I will contact governmental agencies ... Acura Corporate and Dealership need to take lesson from Toyota.

I purchased my 2005 Acura MDX Touring with Nav/DVD brand new from Open Road Acura of Wayne, NJ. For a luxury vehicle I expected much more, especially from Acura corporate. Never once other than a week after my purchase have they followed up with a phone call for all the problems I've encountered with my MDX. I would recommend you take the VIN number to the dealership and see if's subject to a recall! And while you are waiting for them to get back you, check out a Lexus instead of Acura!! We have been extremely disappointed at the Poor Quality of many items on our 2004 MDX. From the sound system, radio reception (Acura folks could NOT even get a BOSE system to work where we ... TSB in the works for 2005 MDX?
Written by: MHirt1 on Jul 27, 2010 8:00:20 PM
Hello. This is my first post. I am the original owner of a 2005 MDX with approximately 62,000 miles. I've noticed the "rumble strip" noise when driving between 25 and 35 mph for the last year or so and never thought much about it. Last week I took the vehicle in for the 60,000 mile service and I mentioned the "rumble strip" sound. The dealer called back to tell me that ... Read More

Sommerfall.....thanks for sharing the actual service bulletin. This is the first time that I have seen it. Even though it applies to model years 2003 and 2004, it is obvious that it should be extended to 2005 and 2006 at the very least given the number of identical torque converter issues. Also, for those vehicle owners who are out of warranty, note that the service bulletin addresses this issue by stating ... Read More

I am happy to report that the torque converter issues my 2004 MDX was experiencing were very satisfactorily handled by my Acura dealer. Here is what I did. First of all, I followed the advice of kpsmith999 (#308 fo 354) Part of the advice was as follows: 1. Open a case file with Honda America at 1-800-382-2238 then press 5. 2. I'm not sure what your symptoms are but my 2001 MDX was making a growling noise at 35 or so from time to time. Acura said it was the torque converter. I replace the rear end oil and the transmission fluid and the noise has gone away. I think it has something to do with the clutches making noise when the fluid gets old. Just an FYI.

I would encourage everyone who is following this link to take a few minutes and file a complaint. The web site is as follows: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/index.cfm Also, the NHTSA has issued a "service bulletin" for this exact same problem for all Acura's for model ... Read More

The "growl" you hear is not normal. The noise is perceived differently by different people. Some call is a vibration, some call it a grinding sound and some have referred to it as a shuddering sound. What all have in common is that it occurs upon acceleration between 25-50 mph (usually 30-40 mph). It starts out intermittently and eventually will occur upon every acceleration (and also becomes more pernounced). Replacing my ... Read More
