You'll need a new/rebuilt transmission; $4,500 Also, two motor mounts are broke, not one. If you never had the timing belt or spark plugs replaced at 110k miles, it's overdue. You'll also need new front lower control arms & balljoints. I have 160k miles my 2003 MDX and it's very well maintained. I'm speaking from experience. I had a similar issue as you. The dealer contact me and offer to reduce it to $2500. I declined the service. I took my 2003 MDX and did a major flush and transmission oil clean up. For my surprise the noise and vibration that I was felling earlier is pretty much gone. But I already decided to sell/trade in the car before year's end. I was very disappointed by Acura ... 2003 MDX Transmission Failure
Written by: rednsx on Nov 15, 2009 2:29:27 PM
My wife's MDX (88,000 miles) transmission would not engage while in a drive-thru. After restarting the car, it became drivable. I drove the vehicle to the mechanic that normally work's on my work truck. He advised me of Acura/Honda transmission problems and suggested I contact the local dealer regarding a possible Acura factory extended warranty. Of course, the service writer I spoke with at the dealership said there was no transmission ... Read More

Hav ehe Acura MDX transmissions been redesigned
Written by: jman1120 on Nov 1, 2009 9:24:52 AM
I have a 2003 MDX that I had major transmission problems. The transmission shop told me that there was a design flaw that Acura will not address. He talked to an Acura rep who told him once they were out of warranty, it was not his problem. I have heard that they did change them somewhat after 03, but not so sure about that. Does anyone know for sure? I was ... Read More

I too have a 2003 MDX. The transmission is still good. But it has a very annoying problem. My driveway is a bit uphill (30 degrees angle). Every time I start my engine and move the gear from P to R to back out my car, the front part of my car will make a very noticeable jump. I guess this would also be transmission related. I never had seen a ... Read More

Acura MDX Transmission Failure

Add my name to the list of MDX owners with a failed transmission. I have a 2003 MDX with 92,000 miles on it when it failed. The clunking brake noise I came to live with, but a transmission failure on a vehicle such as this is ridiculous. I agree with another post that scheduled maintenance at 50,000 miles is a cya move by Acura. Acura will never get another dollar from me ... Read More

2003 MDX Transmission problems

Update to my story from January 2009, where I initially wrote: My MDX has 95,000 miles on it and has the extended warranty to 100,000 miles. Three times in the last two weeks I've started the car in the morning and when it shifts to 2nd gear (going up a slight grade) it's like I put the car in neutral - no pwer but the rpms go way up. Twice it's ... Read More

Hi, I think I am the latest victim of this transmission issue with Acura. My 2003 MDX has 88k miles and I took today to the dealer and they said I need a new transmission and they offer to charge me $3600 for it as being "nice". They said they would charge me only the cost of it I had repair warranty. I have to say that now learning this issue ... Read More

yeah, I know upstatedoc, my bad....bad kobbe. I've done my own maintenance for many, many years and been sorta ignoring the trannys, at least up until recent years when I started driving acuras and hearing/reading about tranny problems with them. The 2003 I owned (before I bought current 2006) that my daughter now drives has 120,000 miles, still going strong, also never changed atf. Maybe just lucky on that one, huh? ... Read More

congrats on getting the issue resolved on the transmission. Of course, that was two years ago. It's a different world today but worth the effort.

Open a case with Acura Client Services. You'll be given a representative that will open a case and work with Acura and your dealer in possibly getting this issue resolved. While there is no set rule or promise I can give, there are plenty of cases where Acura will approve the repair where the customer will either pay nothing, or just labor. My wife's friend had her 2002 transmission replaced at ... Read More

With 80k miles and 6 years on your truck -- you'll get no help on repairs. No manufacturers will fix that unless you bought a chrysler which had a 7/70 power train warranty. Check the price at a top notch independent transmission shop.

2003 Acura MDX Transmission Problem
Written by: sanjaybt on May 2, 2009 3:06:04 PM
I have a 2003 Acura MDX with around 79000 Miles. I now have a transmission problem. The car will automatically goto neutral while stopping at Red-Light. I will need to move to D1 and then move back to D5. Acura has recalled Transmission for the very same problem for 2001 & 2002 models. I went to my dealer yesterday and met with a Service person. He told me that they are ... Read More
