This happened to me shortly after I brought my Acura MDX 2002 Touring Edition. I brought it in 2006 and after having it for 3 months the transmission went out on me on the interstate without any kind of warning or anything. Lucky for me I purchased the extended warranty so it was covered. I was told by my mechanic that the MDX and TL have known transmission problems. Which upset ... Read More

I have a 2002 MDX bought new. After 5 years and only 30,000 miles, the transmission started shuddering when shifting, and Acura replaced it (rebuilt it) under warranty. Now, at about 65,000 miles, it's happening again. I just called the dealer to see if Acura was covering these under warranty even though it's out of warranty, and the service writer told me that transmissions on the MDX are not a recurring ... I came across Service Bulletin : SB-06-050 on the NTSB board when I searched for 2004 MDX problems and this service bulletin talks about "Warranty Extensions" for 2002-2006 models as part of a class action law suite settlement. This one was filled on May 09, 2008. But I am not sure if Acura folks are honoring this settlement, since it does NOT specifically talk about "transmission" problems in the "summary" section ... Yes! Dealer would only offer you if you have any black and white offers from other dealers. The transmission failed and the dealer quoted $4,400 to replace with a 3 yr 36,000 mile warranty rebuilt transmission. After negotiation with Acura for an out-of-warranty subsidy, we settled at a payment of $2,650. In the negotiations, I said: -the transmission was flawed from the factory -Acura knew this -Acura had paid for others out-of-warranty -I had been in touch with class action lawyers I hope this helps somebody else.
from the day that i dropped off the car, a decision was made THAT day about acura covering the cost of the replacement transmission. after that, it took 2-3 days to get the transmission in and then it took anther 2 days to install the replacement. they wouldn't provide a loaner-gues they already felt generous enough.....

However, according to them I need new engine mounts...at 56,000 mile?! Is this directly related to the transmission issue and should Acura be covering this as well if that is indeed the case? Opinions and any info is welcomed, c.
I own an Acura 2002 MDX with 50k on it. There is a reason why we purchased a Honda Acura, due to them being the most reliable cars on the road. Well, this is what I used to think. My wife has driven this care like my grandmother and now it is having transmission problems. Through my local shop, we got an IC code P1740 problem "Problem in 4th Clutch Pressure ... Read More
In order to decide for yourself, you really need to test drive both the MDX and Pilot (extensively, if possible, not just a 2 mile quickie). We ended up with an 2005 MDX Touring Nav & RES ourselves. The MDX offered a few features the 2005 Pilot didn't have: Bluetooth, Stability Control, Curtain Airbags, XM, better Nav system, ability to get both Nav and RES, etc. I think some of those ... Acura has agreed to replace our failed transmission as well. We have a 2002 MDX with 64000 miles. Just had to show we had done all the scheduled maintenence work.
When Acura introduced the 2003 MDX, they announced that they had redesigned the transmission with a newer, "compact" model. On another forum a couple of years back, someone got a hold of images from the mechanics manuals and it confirmed the transmission was a new design. The schematics werre much different. The 2001-2002 MDX transmission was an offshoot of the same design that had problems in other Honda/Acura vehicles. I wouldn't ... Read More
I just purchased a 2002 Acura MDX with a Bose radio system. The AM and FM reception is awful. Does anyone have any suggesions on improving the reception?
The car. A rather drastic move, to be sure. But I know of two parents of our daughters' friends that had such severe difficulty with Japanese seats that they traded the cars and went Euro. One had bought a 2004 GX470 SUV and he is now in a 2005 Volvo XC90 V8. He had back surgery for a slipped disk and the Lexus seats offered poor support in spite of adjustable ... Read More
I doubt your Honda dealer can do warranty work, but they should be able to do the regular services. And, hopefully, with an Acura MDX, warranty work would be a rare event. In the case of my 2002 S2000, 2004 TL 6-speed and 2005 MDX, the only warranty work on any of them was a broken roof latch on the S2000 that occurred at 1,000 miles. I am considering buying a ... Hello folks, I just dropped in to read a few pages to see what the "word" on the street is about the MDX. I have a 2002 Mercedes ML500 that I probably will trade late this year so I've started shopping around. I wanted to consider a wagon (must be 6 or 7 passenger) which would include the Volvo or Mercedes E wagon. Wow, the Volvo site has it's share of ... Read More
I don't even know if this person is still looking at this site because the message is 1.5 years old, but I have to respond. In December 2002 the same thing happened to me. Like you I do not live in a rural area nor in the hills and most of my neighbors and my husband park in our driveways and on the street. At the time it happened to me ... Read More
I have a 2002 MDX and overall it has been fine. I have had three minor issues with it. The first is a clicking noise and a slight shift of the driver's seat when you make a tight turn. The dealer said they fixed it, but I still get it sometimes. Second issue was my LCD screen started leaking and began to look like an etch a sketch. I took it ... Read More
I JUST PURCHASED AN 05 ACURA MDX WITH NAV. I ADDITIONALLY UPGRADED MY VERIZON PHONE TO THE ONLY BLUETOOTH VERSION (MOTOROLA V710) AVAILABLE FROM VERIZON. THE TWO WORK BEAUTIFULLY TOGETHER. YOU JUST HAVE TO REMEMBER TO ACTIVATE THE BLUETOOTH FEATURE OF THE PHONE EACH TIME YOU START THE CAR. FOR SAFETY PURPOSES, ONCE OUT OF PARK, THE MDX WILL NOT ALLOW AN ATTEMPT UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS AGAIN PLACED IN PARK. ... Read More
Go for the MDX. I have been a honda/acura owner for 17 years. With the exception of replacing a timing belt, a few minor warranty things and recalls I have never had any problems with my cars.I am surprised so many have. I recently traded in my 2002 TL for an MDX. I did not have to do anything to my TL except regular maintenance. I am hoping for the same ... Read More
Same problem here. Purchased a 2002 MDX new in January 2002. Transmission failed at around 30K miles in July 2003 (first day of vacation, away from home, would not shift up from 2nd gear). Acura acknowledged that the 2001 and 2002 transmission have a problem with 2nd gear overheating. There is a recall notice (which I received after returning home from vacation...). They either add a fluid injection kit (if they ... Read More
Hello Everyone-- I'm considering a certified used MDX--I just started my search. Am I crazy or is the SUV OK? Any other options? I'm looking to spend between $25-$30K. I own a 2002 Acura TL-S and had the tranmission swapped out @ 14K miles at no cost. Car has run fine for last 20K miles. This one will replace a '98 QX4 with almost 100K miles.
What does everyone think about a used 2002 Acura MDX base w/o Nav or DVD with 26K for $26K. In contrast, an '05 MDX base invoices at $33.5 which is only a $7.5K difference for a 2.5 year old car. Thoughts?
We just bought a 2005 MDX Touring with the works (Nav, DVD) for $40.5k. However, I would have a tough time recommending a 4 1/2 year old MDX for $26.5k, even with the low mileage and Acura certification. That's not much less than a brand new Honda Pilot. And 4-5 years from now, the Pilot will be worth considerably more than an 8-9 year old MDX, not to mention less expensive ... Read More
My daughter wants an MDX. For $25k she has been shown a 2001 Touring with 17,000 miles by one dealer, and a 2002 non-Touring model with 43,000 miles. Is one a better purchase than the other? They're both Acura Certified. She can't quite swing getting a 2003, which from what I've read may have solved some of the problems that existed with the 2001-2 (noise, transmission). Thanks for your help.
