hello: I am on my 3rd 1990-92 Integra. Mine idles at a consent 750, never any issues with backfire. As far as the coolant, sounds like a head gasket to me. We did have a GSR that belched alot of white smoke, had a rip off CT Acura dealer take the engine apart, they stated it was the pistons(it was not, they were not fouled or damaged in any way) sealed ... How do you know that your water pump is fine? You don't mention as to whether or not you checked and/or replaced the engine coolant thermostat, or the engine coolant temperature sensor, which turns your cooling fan on and off, as needed. Did you hear your cooling fan running at all? Also, there are fuses and/or relays involved in the cooling fan circuit, as well as an 'after-run' timer I believe. ... Read More

1990 acura integra gs over heating

my car was over heating a month ago, and it sat in my drive way like that up until 2 nights ago, we replaced the coolant line, put oil in it, anti freeze, transmission stop slip, radiator stop leak, and it sounded good in my drive way, idiling was low, not as much smoke in the back. we then took it for a test drive and sure enough it was over ... Does your "check engine" light stay on or off after turning ignition on? If it stays on its your grounds. This is an issue that I have not found very many Acura dealers or owners know about. If you have questions contact me at jeffcinys@gmail.com. BTW I believe the fuel pump is under the rear passenger seat, drivers side.

Try this... before you try to start the car, just turn the key to the ON position. You should hear the fuel pump running. If you do hear it, then try to start the car. If it starts after the "fuel pump trick" I'd wager the pressure regulator that keeps pressure in the fuel line (like overnight so there's fuel at the engine to start up in the morning) is leaking ... I have had this problem in my 1991 GS and now a 1990 LS. I do get the "check engine" light on at time, usually on a warm day after the car has been running for awhile as well as cold days when the engine is warmed up. I have not tried changing the relay, but I have found that the butterfly valve that is on the end of the throttle ... Read More

It could be a fast idle valve. I don't have a 90 service manual, but look in section 11 of 94 service manual, trouble shooting section. It will help you to find the problem. http://tech.hybridgarage.com/tech/manuals/94%20acura%20integra%20service%20manua- l.pdf

When the car is in park, the car will stall sometimes too. As for the belt, its fine.

So you have personally witnessed both fans running at the same time with the A/C on? Then you have to go to the next obvious culprit - the radiator. Your car and your friend's are both old cars at this point - if these are original radiators, they may be so plugged up at this point that they are just barely doing the job most of the time. As soon as ... Read More

I can't remember exactly on the 2nd-gen Integra, but many of the older Japanese cars had two electric cooling fans, one that runs off the temp sensor and a second one that runs all the time when the A/C is on. If that second fan has quit, the car will overheat all the time whenever you use the A/C, but will run without a problem the rest of the time. Might ... Read More

Does the A/C appear to work correctly? If the AC compressor is failing it could be causing excessive load on the engine. Is there someplace you could get your air conditioner diagnosed FOR FREE ? One other thing what type of drving speed does it occur? idle, city , highway or doesn't matter. I know you are new to Edmunds forums and that is why gbrozen and I tried to answer ... Read More

Thanks for your input qbrozen... Thing is on my friends 91 LS he removed the thermostat and it continued to do the same thing. So he then replaced it with a new one. Same problem continued. He changed the Coolant temp Sensor to the left side of the engine right under the distributor and two other sensors to the back of the engine(Not sure of their names, will find out)... but ... Well, first off, that's not your A/C fan running when you shut off the car. That's the engine cooling fan. The reason it continues to run, probably, is because the car is running too hot. There's something wrong with the cooling system. Could be the thermostat, the temp sensor, or the fan itself. I'm not well versed in your particular car, but I suspect the thermostat.

the short version
Written by: nippononly on Apr 15, 2006 12:48:32 AM
is NO, they DON'T make cars like your '90 any more! Emissions standards, platform sharing, and a million tiny tweaks in search of that extra quarter point of fuel economy have taken care of that. Acura as a brand has grown up a lot since 1990 too, so the cars they offer have changed in mission to be a bit more "sophisticated", which equates to less visceral drivng feel. Drive by ... Read More

could be a vacuum leak or something to do with the fuel/air delivery (clogged injectors, relay, etc.). Idle problems have a huge range of possibilites. It could even be your TPS sensor.

Thanks, bdog for the suggestion. I'll give it a look. I guess I am a little concerned about staying small b/c of the saftey factor, but not so concerned that I want a big gas guzzler. I feel that the handling of my Integra & especially its fast braking has saved me from several accidents.

If you're car shakes every time you brake my guess is your rotors are done. You can try to resurface them if they're not too eaten up... otherwise you should just upgrade/replace them. If your car is a manual and you dont want to be constantly resurfacing your rotos I recommend NOT braking in neutral. Yes, you heard me :D . Just leave your car in gear when you're braking and ...
