To all of you who have had Trans problems on the Acura and especially to the one who said "do not buy a Honda or Acura". Wow is all I can say. I'd bet you are a person who drives 65 in the left lane. My sister currently owns a 2003 Acura CL with 198K on it. Never a trans problem, never any major issues. She bought it new and has ... Read More
I have a 2003 CLS that the transmission is going at 54,000. I am unemployed and the dealer will not fix it. It is out of warranty. Is there a class action suit going on now as I cannot believe how many people are having the same problem!~
I own a 2003 Acura CLS 3.2 with 47,000 miles on it. It was purchased new & has been mantained by the dealership. I had the car in for service 2 days ago & complained about the car not shifting properly. They assured me nothing was wrong with the transmission. Today the transmission went completely & I had to have the car towed. Turns out they did not even do a ... Read More
I recently bought a 2003 Acura CL Type S. It currently has 49,500 miles on it and falls just outside the VIN range of affected vehicles in Acura's A/T recall. I am thinking about buying an extended warranty thru Acura as I am a little concerned that the A/T issue may not be isolated to the identified 2003 VIN's. Any thoughts...good idea, bad idea?? Any and all comments welcome... Thanks!
I owned a 2003 CL-S w/ 6-spd manual. I put about 40k miles on it over 3 years, and recently traded it for a Honda Hybrid. The Acura was great, and had no problems during the time I owned it. I would recommend it for anybody who wants a comfortable sports coupe that provides strong, refined performance at any speed, who doesn't need a lot of back seat space, and who ... Read More
I am contemplating buying a 2003 CL-Type S w/ about 45k miles. The postings in this forum are making me think twice. I love the car...but do not want to be paying for a mistake for the next 3 years. The VIN is out of the range on the Acura extended warranty. Is the transmission issue a widesrpead problem or only on a minority of CL's? Any advice or insight??? Thanks!! ... Read More

Acura has extended the warranty on the A/T and torque converter for all 2001 & 2002. Whether a 2003 CL is covered depends on the VIN. (See: Service Bulletin 02-027 dated 1/21/05 titled Warranty Extension : 3.2TL and 3.2CL Automatic Transmission (supercedes 02-027 dated 9/15/03) I have a 2003 CL that I purchased in August 2002. The transmission failed at 45389 miles. The first symptom was a slight slip between 2 ... Read More
No my friend, I have a 2003 model, it is not the 1st year one. I gave the example of Firestone because my Acura had lots of quality issues, even some of the interior side panels were lose. I had bought my car when speedometer was 21 miles... Now I have 26k miles & we all know Ö..after 2003 the CL-S was no-more.
I have a 2003 CL with the 6 speed and am not happy. There were problems with the trans since day one - the 6 speed was rebuilt at 8500 miles - Acura does not offer a rebuilt, so the existing unit has to be serviced. The car was hard to shift and pops out of first gear. The rebuild was worse then the original. The car is back at the ... Read More
I know it is a bit early (even here in Denver) but since the 2003 CL-S 6 Sp just came out this spring, there likely is no "driving in the snow and slush" experience yet. My concern is the OEM Michelin Pilot HX MXM4's that are the tires that come standard with the car. Does anyone with a CL-S auto have any experience in similar winter weather situations? The tirerack website ... Read More
I've ultimately decided to either buy the 2001 Acura CL TYPE-S or the 2003 Honda Accord EX V6, Coupe or the 2003 Toyota Camry Solara SLE V6, coupe. To be honest, I absolutely love the Acura but as the more research I do on this model the more I'm leaning away from it. Actually, I'm avoiding it like the plague! To all of the 2001 Acura CL TYPE-S owners out there, ... Read More
The 2003 EX is a good, practical choice. I also bought the CL-S for practicality & reliability reasons. I had a 1997 Acura Integra. The Integra was a fabulous car, but I wanted something a bit more regal. I wanted something quieter, a little more luxurious, and a little bigger. However, my #1 concern was reliability. With the exception of the tranny, I've had the reliability. The biggest push for me ... Read More
After reading countless stories of tranny problems and rotor replacements, I'm going with the 2003 Honda Accord EX, V6 coupe. Why buy a used 2001 Acura CL 3.2 with all its inherent problems, when I can get a used 2003 Honda Accord EX, V6 coupe with none for the same price? This is my rationale. ~D~
Thanks motokichi for the help. Yeah, I called back the Acura dealership with the three Acura CL 3.2s, each with 30K (+) miles on them, and he said "they all have rebuilt transmissions with new clutch paks," whatever that means. However, you said your acura dealer replaced your transmission with "all new, no re-build. The service manager said they don't even tear down the old tranny, just ship it back to ... Read More
I've contacted two Acura dealerships in my town about their 2001 Acura CL 3.2s in stock and this modelís well-known, defective transmission problem. Both dealerships have stated that their 2001 Acura CL 3.2s have new transmissions. However, I never did follow up with the question as to whether these new transmissions were temporary, stopgaps or totally redesigned transmissions that fixed the original problem. My worse fear is that these are rebuilt ... Read More
Hi Folks, I was just reading the September issue of Car & Driver...a review on the 2003 Accord Coupe EX V6 with a 6 speed. Something funny stuck out in the text, which is news to me. It reads: "It would be lovely if Honda also offered the CL's limited-slip differential for the EX two-door. After all, the CL won't be needing it anymore, having joined the ranks of the dearly ... This is the last year of the Acura CLs. http://www.detnews.com/2003/business/0304/04/b03-127830.htm
To leekva and basset3, Sadly, it looks like there won't be a 2004 CL, and that 2003 may well be the last of it. There have been no "official" announcements from Honda yet (they historically are very tight-lipped about things until the very last moments), but various bits of evidence collectively seem to point to this conclusion (gathered form the www.acura-cl.com site): - Someone who works inside the Acura CL plant ... Does anyone out there know why Acura pulled the foglights from the 2003 CL? The 2001-02 CLs had foglights - the 2003 has just a blank space there. The 2003 TL still has them.
I am also interested in the TL for my next new car but I am worried over the transmission issue. I have heard a couple of terrible stories on this forum of the transmission suddenly and abrubtly failing on the highway. How could one drive 70 mph and be worried that all of a sudden the trans could drop into a much lower gear especially how close some trucks drive behind ... Read More
Hi folks, I just bought a charcoal gray 2003 3.2CL automatic with rear spoiler!!! It's my first new car purchase. My one and a half month long car shopping journey has now ended, what a ride (went thru like 10 cars)! The car had 7 miles on it. We put another 5 miles on the way to get gas. Going to pick it up on Sat. or Mon. The date on ... Read More
I am thinking about purchasing an 2003 Acura CL. This car seems to have all the feathures except one - daytime running lights, which I think is a useful and cool feature. Seems like honda/acura doesn't provide this feature in any of their cars. Btw, anyone just bought a 03 CL? How much did you pay? I got two quotes over the phone for a 03 CL base model: both are ... Hello there - 'first time writer long time reader'. I'm the proud owner of a 1997 Acura CL 3.0. At the time I had enough money for either the 2.3 w/ leather or the 3.0 with cloth - since leather doesn't pass well on Chicago's expressways, I opted for the 3.0. Now 5 years old and 115,000 miles, the thing just keeps going and is just as quick as when I ... Read More
Anyone else driven a 2003 CL-S with the manual? I've driven two (at different dealers) and can only conclude that this car has quality control problems. The first one I drove had a clutch that engaged too soon (my opinion, but one that I've read in another review) and the shifting was very notchy. The second, had a clutch that engaged later and the shifting was much soother. However, the 2nd ... Read More
Hi, everyone: This is my first posting, and I'd be grateful for any knowledge on this issue. I'll be leasing a new car in December 2002 (that's when I have to hand in my old leased car). Normally, that's the best time to get a new car, in my case the week of Christmas. But since Acura CL (and TL) will be changed for 2004, and become available in the spring ... Read More
Yup. Heard the same thing. Here's the quote from ConsumerGuide review: "Acura had planned an early sendoff for the 2003 CLs, which are now in showrooms, but the model's long-term future is in some doubt. That's according to one recent Japan-based report saying that Honda is thinking of dropping the CL unless sales improve fairly soon." Not only that, here's a picture of the 2003 Accord Coupe that will probably have ... Read More
What do you guys think about the rumors that Acura wants to drop the CL after 2003/4?
To all- According to the current issue of Motor Trend, the 2003 Acura CL-S will be out this month with the 6-speed! Guess they do listen. I prefer the automatic, Also, their long term test was good too except their CL-S had some rattles! This even astounded them considering Acura's reliability. fastdriver
For any of you who may have wanted to see the 2003 CL, here's a link. This shows the new taillights, base CL wheels (much, much better looking, IMHO), the new CL Type-S wheels (not as nice as now--why did they change them?), and the Type-S interior with the six speed stick and new brushed aluminum replacing the gray wood. Here, feast your eyes! http://www.thehollywoodextra.com/acura/acura.html
that the 2003 Acura CL-S with the 6-sp is gonna dust some BMW feathers.
