There are several models in 1997 to 2001 and possibly others that are having unusual transmission problems with low mileage and regular upkeep. My Acura is a 1999 CL 2.3 136k, I'm the original owner and have had regular maintenance done. The car was babied for it's entire life, looks new inside and out, yet has a transmission that surges at start and stop. While researching the issue it appears Honda ... Read More
Original owner of a 1997 Acura CL 3.0. City 21, Highway 25. 195,000 miles and still going strong!
Hi, I have AN Acura 3.0 Cl 1997. Two years ago, I had a very tiny rust came fron the inside rear wheel well. I spent $400 to fix it. The body garage tech. told me to remove the rubber protection strips on both rear wheel wells and put in the protection clear tape on the rea wheel well lips instead to prvent from the rust comes back. He said that ... Read More
My engine light went on (1997, CL 2.2, 67,000 miles) and car's book indicated it would be an emissions problem. While Acura dealer service rep was waiting for authorization from extended warranty company, he instead found that the problem (THROTTLE BODY part) was covered under a bulletin/(recall?) from Acura for 1995-97 models. That covered the $770 part/labor. I got the feeling that had rep not been waiting for extended warranty authorization ... Read More
Does anyone know FOR SURE if the 97 CL was affected w/ the bad transmission or not? Sincerely, Warren
The 2003 EX is a good, practical choice. I also bought the CL-S for practicality & reliability reasons. I had a 1997 Acura Integra. The Integra was a fabulous car, but I wanted something a bit more regal. I wanted something quieter, a little more luxurious, and a little bigger. However, my #1 concern was reliability. With the exception of the tranny, I've had the reliability. The biggest push for me ... Read More
I've contacted two Acura dealerships in my town about their 2001 Acura CL 3.2s in stock and this model’s well-known, defective transmission problem. Both dealerships have stated that their 2001 Acura CL 3.2s have new transmissions. However, I never did follow up with the question as to whether these new transmissions were temporary, stopgaps or totally redesigned transmissions that fixed the original problem. My worse fear is that these are rebuilt ... Read More
I am looking at a 1997 Acura CL with 95000 miles. The owner is asking for $8900. She has been taking of the car(as she said) and have just done the 90000 service includes timing belts. What do you guys think of the car and price? How many miles will it last? Any thoughts?
Here's where I'm coming from (long but thorough), I own the CL b/c I couldn't find a Nissan dealer in 1997 who would sell me a Maxima SE for less than the CL 3.0. I like that Nissan is widening the gap between the Maxima and the I35 (which I also really like for 2002). But a couple weeks ago was the first time I ever went to an Infiniti dealer ... Read More
Hello there - 'first time writer long time reader'. I'm the proud owner of a 1997 Acura CL 3.0. At the time I had enough money for either the 2.3 w/ leather or the 3.0 with cloth - since leather doesn't pass well on Chicago's expressways, I opted for the 3.0. Now 5 years old and 115,000 miles, the thing just keeps going and is just as quick as when I ... Read More

Fastdriver, From my experience, I would not be too concerned with a nose mask on the CL. The design of the car results in about 85% fewer stone chips on the hood and grill than that award winning predecessor of yours did. Also, my dealings with A&H since 1997 have found them to be very customer sat oriented, they have always done me right. They market real Honda/Acura stuff at good ... Read More
I CURRENTLY OWN A 1995 INFINITI G20. ALTHOUGH I HAVE HAD GOOD LUCK WITH THIS CAR AND LOVE THE HANDLING, THE ACCELERATION IS A LITTLE SLOW. I AM LOOKING AT A USED 3.0 CL (A 1997) AND ALSO A '97 CADILLAC CATERA. AT THIS POINT I AM LEANING TOWARD THE CL BECAUSE OF ITS SPORTIER APPEARANCE AND FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD, BETTER RELIABILITY. I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD GIVE ... Read More
